Council operates two nurseries for the benefit of community groups – at the Council works depot at Kolodong near Taree and at Tuncurry.
Plants from the nursery are used by Landcare groups such as Nabiac, Taree and Old Bar as well as in bush regeneration projects undertaken by Council. The nursery propagates plants that Landcare groups need and can help groups undertake seed collection, if required.
When the council nursery at Kolodong was closed many years ago, it fell into disrepair and Manning Coastcare took on responsibility for it, staffed by a team under the Centrelink Volunteer Workers Program (work for the dole). Grant funding was used to repair the nursery where possible and, for example, a new roof was installed on the seed raising house. In 2014 Council resumed management of the nursery and it is now operated under the supervision of Kim Gollan, who previously ran the Dingo Creek Rainforest Nursery. She is currently assisted by independent volunteers.
