Tree Trough Demo Day- Water for Wildlife
Water for Wildlife
2025 has been a rollercoaster for the MidCoast area - biblical floods followed by a desperately dry and hot spring. The toll of such sporadic weather events is huge, and the current hot spell means there is not as much fresh water around for our local wildlife. We know that there is a clear link between heat stress and Chlamydia in Koalas, and can assume that other species may be similarly impacted by heat stress and water shortages.
In times like these, we like to remind landholders about the importance of maintaining a fresh water supply for birds and other wildlife. This can be as simple as a bird bath, or a little more complicated with a DIY Wildlife Water Pod, such as the ones we built in the PLCM program in Dec 2022. These PVC water pods can be easily constructed with readily available materials for around $30. They hold around 10-15L and are a great way to get a reliable fresh water supply into your habitat areas.
A more complex system is the TreeTroff®, which is an elevated water supply of around 250L. Following the 2019 Black Summer fires, WIRES began the Water for WIldlife program to distribute Tree Troffs® to landholders. These elevated water stations place water storage units in trees at about 3m off the ground and are a great invention for arboreal mammals, birds and reptiles. On Wednesday 17th December, MC2T will be demonstrating how to install a TreeTroff® water station in a forest scenario in Pacific Palms. In a few hours, you will see how to put them together and learn about the kind of animals that are likely to utilise them in a Wet Sclerophyll gully at a beautiful coastal property. This is a short and sharp demo day.
